3.6 Typical Application Rates
Tuffcoat Sealcoat shall be applied to obtain an application rate of approximately 20 gallons per 1000 sq. ft. on a smooth clean surface, 30 gallons per 1000 sq. ft. on a medium surface and 40 or more gallons per 1000 sq. ft. on a rough surface. All estimates are based off a two coat application.
Sealcoat is generally applied with a walking type rubber-faced squeegee. Specially designed squeegees are available for this type of work.
A minimum application crew would usually be two people operating squeegees, one person supplying material, and one person opening the drums and mixing the material.
The material should be spread in a long windrow of about 3 to 4 inches in width along one edge of the area to be surfaced. With two squeegee people, a windrow of several hundred feet in length can be handled with out too much difficulty.
After the windrow is in place, the first person places the squeegee at a 45 ° angle to the length on the windrowed material, placing the center of the squeegee on the material. Pull the squeegee while walking parallel to the windrow, letting the slant of the squeegee move material over toward the squeegee person’s feet. Prevent material from spilling over the outer (forward) edge of the squeegee. This will cause ridges to form when the material dries,
The second squeegee person places their squeegee at the same angle but on the surface of the freshly laid material, and follows the first person. The purpose of the second person is to smooth the surface and pick up any excess material left over by the first squeegee. This procedure is continued until the entire area is coated. The windrow should never be allowed to be depleted.
If the surface temperatures are excessive, (a dark surface can exceed 140 ° F, on a 90 - 100 ° day), it may be helpful to have another person in the crew with a hose equipped with a nozzle to fog the surface ahead of the material. This will reduce the need to excessively dilute the materials during periods of hot weather.
Excessive dilution of the Tuffcoat Sealcoat material will reduce the film thickness being applied to the asphalt pavement surface.
Drying will take about 4 to 6 hours in clear weather. It is not necessary for the material to be exposed to direct sun light. Tuffcoat Sealcoat works best in weather conditions that support water evaporating off the pavement. Temperatures should be 50 degrees F and rising with no imminent snow, rain, or freezing temperatures.
- We recommend Tuffcoat Sealcoat be applied with two coats on all pavement surfaces. This application technique will provide greater profile restoration of pavement surfaces.
- The finished surface shall be smooth, free of ridges, valleys and tool marks.
